Armed with an MBA degree from Melbourne and an understanding of modern financing, Shravan Shroff is at the vanguard of dragging India’s prolific yet ponderous film industry into the 21st Century.
At 37, Shravan Shroff personifies entrepreneurial sprit at its effervescent best and has been instrumental in spearheading the concept of introducing modern, plush and comfortable cinema halls in Mumbai.
In the year 1996, he came back to India from Melbourne to join the family-run film distribution business – Shringar Films. It was his deep understanding of the movie business coupled with the international exposure that helped him recognize the existing gap in the Indian film exhibition industry and capitalize on the vast untapped potential that Multiplex business hold in India.
With the mission of providing cine-lovers a unique and exhilarating movie viewing experience, Shravan founded Shringar Cinemas Pvt. Ltd. in 1997. The Company, which made a modest beginning by acquiring programming rights for single screen theatres, went on to introduce Mumbai’s first ever state-of-art five screen multiplex in Mumbai – Fame Adlabs. In quick succession Fame Multiplexes started making their presence felt in a host of cities across the country. Fame cinemas have become a landmark destination for movie viewers all over India thanks to constant innovation and a desire to stay at the top by offering the all the ingredients that go into the making of a ‘perfect movie viewing experience’.
To fuel his dream of giving Fame a pan India presence, Shringar Cinemas (now Fame Cinemas) went public under Shravan’s leadership in April 2005. The company currently operates 18 properties –across India. Including the existing operational 68 screens and, the company strength would increase to approximately 300 screens in the next five years. With its aggressive plans, Fame Cinemas is emerging as one of India’s largest and finest multiplex chains.
Shravan has been included in Society Magazines’s Top 100 Young Achievers list (2005). Shravan’s name also figures in the prestigious India Today Young Guns, the 50 on the fast track list (2005), Filmfare’s list of Film Industry’s Top Fifty most powerful list (2006 and 2008). Fame Cinemas was also awarded the Star Screen Award for best distribution and exhibition for the year 2005. These nominations are a few accolades that the media has bestowed on him. Apart from this, Shravan is invited to address institutions like Chicago Business School, INSEAD, Symbiosis, IIT’s and IIM campuses from time to time and to speak at prestigious media events such as the IIFA Awards, FICCI and India Retail Summit.
Shravan has also been chosen by the UB Group in its McDowell’s Signature Campaign as an ‘Icon of Success’. In 2005, Shravan was invited by the I & B Ministry to join the Censor Board of India as a member. Shravan was also the Co-Chairman of the Entertainment Sub-Committee of CII (Confederation of Indian Industries), Mumbai for the year 2004-2005.
Recently, Shravan has become a member of the prestigious Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), a US based non-profit educational organization for high net worth business owners.
Presently, he is working towards bringing in synergies between the distribution and exhibition of films in India and plans to emerge as the single largest national player of the exhibition industry. Taking a step in this direction, Shravan has been instrumental in forming the first national theater owner’s alliance of the country.
Shravan is an avid movie lover and aims at promoting the Indian Film Industry in the International arena. His other interests lie as a keen observer of the aviation industry around the world. As a natural outcome of the former, Shravan is passionate about traveling as well.
